I have been lucky enough to be President of Camberley Speakers for 2 years. I originally joined the club to improve my public speaking skills. I work in sales, and was used to giving presentations for most of my working career. But I was amazed at how much I learnt!
More importantly, my listening skills have also developed and I have learnt to give feedback in a constructive manner. However, the most important and fulfilling experience of my Toastmasters journey so far, especially as Club President, has been to see the development in confidence and ability in all the members.
The group is very diverse, but everyone finds their own learning curve and it is brilliant to see them improve and grow. I have met some wonderful people, made lovely friends, learnt more new skills than I ever anticipated. It was, and still is, one of the best ways to spend my time. I love it!
I went to my first ever Toastmaster Meeting on 4th October 2005 at Guildford Speakers and joined soon after.
Later, when Guildford Speakers split into 2 clubs, Guildford and Woking, I decided to join the new club Woking Speakers.
I subsequently became Woking President, a role I really enjoyed, and when the role came to an end after two years, I was invited to become President at another new Club: Camberley Speakers.
This was followed by a spell as Area Governor.
I am still very involved with Camberley Speakers as Past President and VP Membership, and I am also Club Coach at Farnham Speakers.
My name is Maria and I have been attending Toastmasters since 2009.
Public speaking is something I do for “fun”, strange I know but there is a little thrill every time you speak! Toastmasters is such a supportive environment to learn a skill that can only be improved by “doing”.
When I first started I was extremely nervous as I was aware my grammar and speaking skills in general were areas that needed a lot of work. Although there is still room for improvement I feel a lot more comfortable speaking and have even had the opportunity at area level competitions! Even more thrilling!
I went as a guest to a meeting of Camberley Speakers in May 2009, and found it a most enjoyable and exhilarating experience, so joined the club immediately. Since then I have held several committee positions, and met lots of nice people within our friendly club atmosphere.
I continue to attend most of the bi-monthly meetings and the speaking contests, and enjoy the challenge of improving my speaking and listening skills.
I am available to assist others who feel they could benefit from individual mentoring as a way of building up their self confidence and developing their own skills.
I joined Camberley Speakers a few years ago. Everyone at the club goes out of their way to make new members feel welcome and I have since gone on to do 9 prepared speeches. I have also done numerous speech evaluations and can feel my confidence grow as I participate in the activities.
